REACH & Substances

Europump maintains a strong and proactive engagement in EU chemicals regulation, with a particular focus on REACH, PFAS and other substance-related policies that affect pump manufacturers across Europe. The association follows legislative developments closely and coordinates the industry's input to public consultations — including joint contributions to the PFAS restriction proposals — so that feasible regulatory pathways exist for the substances used in pump components and sealing technologies.

PFAS and fluoropolymers

PFAS remain the most critical substance topic for members. Europump monitors the evolving restriction process, supports technical assessments and alerts companies to consultation windows.

Why it matters for pumps: fluoropolymers are essential in pumps — as in many industrial applications — because of their unique properties, and they are not themselves used in manufacturing non-fluorinated substances. Their recognition as essential, recently noted by ECHA, is a positive step. The remaining challenges are supply-chain communication and a clear differentiation between the most hazardous PFAS and fluoropolymers, so that industrial safety and environmental protection advance together.

The wider substances agenda

Beyond PFAS, Europump tracks the broader chemicals landscape as it affects pump systems:

  • the REACH revision and the treatment of substances of concern;
  • material disclosure requirements and their links with circular-economy legislation;
  • RoHS, whose evolving restrictions may affect electrical components and materials used in pump systems.

Working with partners

To reinforce its policy impact, Europump coordinates its advocacy with Orgalim in Brussels, and internationally with the Hydraulic Institute (HI) and FPP4EU. Through structured monitoring, technical expertise and these partnerships, Europump advocates balanced, science-based chemical regulation that supports both environmental protection and industrial competitiveness.
